10 Ways to Get Promoted at Work

goals Apr 07, 2022

If you’d like to get a promotion at work and you’re wondering what it might take to get it, there are several things you can do to increase your odds of securing one.

And I don’t mean commonsense things like being more confident or enthusiastic. I’m talking about concrete actions to make such a solid impression on your superiors that they’ll be eager to assign you more responsibilities, a new job title, and a bigger paycheck.

As someone who has been running companies for many years, I can promise you this…

Even if you’re not explicitly looking for a more exciting title or more money (although why not?), these ten tips will help you become—or remain—a valued employee.

#1: Develop your mind

Making a big move in life requires a paradigm shift. So, it would help if you started feeding your mind differently to think and act differently. Spend time reading every day. Also, listen to personal development audio programs and podcasts frequently. Also, study the company’s competitors for insights on how to help your company grow.

#2: Ask how you can improve

No matter how good you are at your job, there is ALWAYS room for improvement. Ask your supervisor and coworkers how you can get better. Receive constructive criticism from your boss or anyone else without getting defensive. Follow through and do what your supervisor suggests.

#3: Bring in revenue

Every organization wants to increase its bottom line. So, if you find ways to bring in revenue or save money, your supervisor will see you as a valuable part of the company. It will put you in a solid position to advocate based on your results — and justify the accompanying pay raise.

#4: Work with a sense of urgency

Instead of rushing to finish projects, develop a systematic approach for getting one thing done after another. Then, follow your plan, focus on each task, and work with a sense of urgency (getting a lot done in a short amount of time). That will lead to great work and distinguish you from others.

#5: Offer to help

Instead of waiting for your supervisor to come to you with a request, ask if there is anything else you can be working on to help grow the company. And when it’s appropriate, say, “I noticed that this needs to be done. I’ll take care of it.”

#6: Learn from others that have been promoted

If someone else has been promoted at your company, see what you can learn from their experience. Ask how they did it. Would they have done anything differently? Also, ask if they have any feedback or advice for you.

#7: Hold the image of the position you want

Get clear about what you want. Create a vision of it (or a clear idea) and use your will to hold the image on the screen of your mind a few times each day. Conjure up the feelings you would have if you already had your desire.

Also, to set yourself up for a successful day, consider incorporating some or all of the following activities into your morning routine: practice gratitude, meditate, read affirmations, and use autosuggestion.

#8: Identify and solve problems

Every business has inefficiencies and problems. You can distinguish yourself as an excellent employee or show your leadership potential by taking the initiative to solve them.

Look for things that are impeding productivity, generating unnecessary costs, costing the company sales, or anything else that may be preventing the company from achieving its goals.

Create a plan to improve those areas. Companies hold self-starters in high regard. If you decide to take the initiative in areas where your company may be weak, you may have a significant advantage over other candidates for a promotion.

#9: Be aware of your thoughts

Formless energy is constantly flowing to and through you. You and your Mind give it form by thinking. If you hold a negative thought, such as “I’m not good enough to be promoted,” you turn that creative energy into something you don’t want. When you hold a positive, beautiful thought, you turn that energy into something you desire.

Think on the same frequency as the good you desire AND get emotionally involved with those thoughts, and you will take the actions necessary to achieve the goal automatically.

#10: Always do your best

The pursuit of excellence brings the absolute best of you to bear on whatever you are doing. Develop a mindset focused on pursuing excellence, no matter how you feel about what you are doing. It can make the difference between falling far short of your career goals and accomplishing things you never dreamed were possible.

Let’s All Rise Together

Each of these strategies can help you get promoted at work. I hope you’ll put a few of them to work for you.

However, these are just ten things you can do to get noticed by your boss to get promoted. There are countless others.

If you’ve been promoted recently, I’d like to congratulate you! I’d also like to ask for a favor…

Please share a tip or two that helped you earn your promotion in the comments below. I’m sure the community would appreciate all the insights they can get as they set their sights on becoming more and better at what they love to do.

Best Regards,
